Looking for the following:

Type of opportunity:

Lease (1 to 5 Years), Lease (5+ Years), Lease with Option to Buy, Internship / Mentorship, Incubator / Mentored Lease, Business Partnership, Employment, Employment with Transfer. More info: We are a young married couple looking to start our first farm - we are mostly interested in a lease, but are open to other arrangements. I have extensive experience with agriculture in North Carolina, but we lack the capital needed to purchase our own property. With that said, we are looking to start an operation capable of generating significant income (to be put toward our future property purchase). And at the same time, doing what we love and producing the highest quality food for ourselves and the local community.

Equipment & infrastructure:

Well / Pond / Other water source, Farmer housing.

Current farming practices:

Biodynamic, Certified organic, Transitioning to organic, Ecological production but not certified, None, the property is not being farmed.

Qualifications and goals:

Previous farming experience:

Employee, Manager

Number of years experience:

5

Other qualifications:

Farm business training, Higher education in agriculture or related field. More info: I was a Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) in North Carolina (license now expired) Worked for 5 years for Helena in North and South Carolina, where I managed sales of agricultural inputs, and consulted farmers on proper crop management

Production goals:

Herbs, Poultry (Broiler/Layer), Vegetable production, Woodlot or forest products. More info: Mostly looking for intensive annual vegetable production using methods popularized by Jean-Martin Fortier and Eliot Coleman. As this is our first farming venture, we want to keep the size small so we can focus on maximizing produce quality while also reducing risk. Mushroom production is also on my list of production goals, but is not a deal-breaker at this point. Use of chickens as a recycler of agricultural waste products, and producer of high-nutrient manure to be used as a fertilizer in vegetable production. Sustainable woodlot/forest products/timber production is also a part of our long-term plans, but like mushrooms, isn't a deal breaker at this point.

Personal experience and production goals summary:

My wife and I are both college graduates with 4-year degrees.

I hold a bachelor's degree in Biology from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC

I'm very experienced and knowledgeable with agricultural production in the southern Appalachians, including the soils, climate & weather, crops, pests, and (most importantly) native forest ecology surrounding production areas.

Additionally, I maintain many local and regional contacts in the ag. industry, including other farmers, extension agents, and university specialists.
