Property Description

Mainspring, a western North Carolina land trust non-profit, has two parcels of farmland available for lease or for an incubator farm arrangement. One is 7 acres and one is 23 acres. Both parcels, part of one property, are located between the Valley River and the highway along US 19/129 north of Murphy, NC near the Andrews Airport. They are located on part of the historic Welch Farm, a native Cherokee family. It is all prime farmland and some of the most productive land in the state. Soils are classified as Rosman fine sandy loam, which is a prime soil. The 7 acre tract was fallow in 2016 and leased in 2014 and 2015 by an organic production farmer, so is eligible for organic certification this year. Because of this recent use, Mainspring would prefer it continue to be operated organically. The larger tract is 23 acres and has been farmed conventionally.
