Personal experience and production goals summary:

Managed 500 Ac row crops and 1700 ac timber on a plantation/farm in SC from 1996 to 2001.  Handled all aspects of the farm business management including timber and commodity sales, enterprise budgeting and farm business plan.  Initiated efforts for alternative crops such as sorghum, sunflower and millet for bird seed packaging plants in a period of historically low grain pricing. Worked as day labor and season help on various farms, predominantly row crop operations and a few cattle operations.  Experienced in alternative practices at the time that are now mainstream, such as no-till / one pass farming and gps montitored and guided equipment.     A lot has evolved in 15 years and I will be educating myself on current best practices and the market of various production options.    Alternative crops are appealing as i will not initially require any income from the operation and will roll any revenue back into the operation.
