Farm-Manager/Camp-Counselor, Changing Tomorrow Farms; Holly Springs, NC —2018
This is a small, young farm in Holly Springs North Carolina. I helped design, build and maintain a variety of projects on the farm. These included fencing, earthen-dams, raised garden beds and housing for a variety of exotic and domestic animals. The farm was primarily a teaching/day-camp environment, but the gardens produced cucumber, watermelon, tomatoes, zuchini and squash. Animal life on the farm consisted of a small flock of goats and sheep, a horse, a pony, a llama, an alpaca, a flock of chickens geese, guinea pigs and the odd dog and cat.
HelpX Volunteer, Between Two Locusts Farm, Marshall NC — Fall, 2017
This was a week long Live-Work exchange that I did while traveling in Western NC. The farm is a small sized cattle farm that specializes in Highland Cattle. Formerly a christmas tree farm, Johnny and his family have put a lot of work into rehabilitating the land and turning it into an excellent permaculture project. The whole property is off-grid, using solar, wind energy and spring water to provide for a very comfortable existence. As a volunteer I did routine farm chores of chicken feeding, moving cows, weeding raised beds etc. I also took on a few independent projects during my stay. building erosion control, making stone paths, and fence building/repair.
Subcontractor, Recovery Logistics Incorporated; Sanford, NC — Fall, 2016
Seasonal emergency deployment to provide critical support for people affected by hurricanes Matthew and Hermine. I was trained to operate a small boom crane, telescopic handler forklift, and a standard counterbalance forklift for use within a warehouse environment. I used these vehicles mostly to catalogue, and deploy essential equipment (generators, light-towers,etc.) to relief sites throughout the South East region.
Subcontractor, Medlin Construction Co; Apex, NC — 2015-2016
I was a general “handyman” for several of the Leith Automotive Dealerships in NC. Tasks included office construction, carpentry, painting, and filing documents. I also worked on the small farm owned by Mr.Medlin, he had a small flock of chickens, several horses, and an organic vegetable patch. The farm was relatively small (3 acres) but I was trained to operate a tractor, backhoe and skid steer.
