More info: My grandfather was a farmer in the piedmont and I spent my summers growing up helping him. I learned pretty much everything from him and my mother who is an avid gardener. While I have never considered myself a "professional" or a "horticulturist" or anything like that, I have gardened my entire life and most years grow enough food to pay for my hobby and feed myself all winter.
Production goals:
Field crops, Flowers, Herbs, Orchard, Poultry (Broiler/Layer), Vegetable production.
Personal experience and production goals summary:
When I was in my early twenties I worked on vineyards in the Willmaette Valley in Oregon, later I worked on organic farms in the mountains of Humboldt County, Ca. At one point my best friend and I operated a five acre produce farm in Penrose, NC that specialised in organic heirloom vegetables, cut flowers, eggs/poultry, mule foot hogs, and dairy goats. For the past few years I have been converting my abused, suburban lawn into a highly productive no-till vegetable garden. I have developed relationships throughout my community that allow me to sell any produce that I do no preserve, which so far has allowed me to break even. I keenly interested in permaculture, biodynamic practices, and no-till techniques. I would like to have to have a flock of chickens again, and gradually produce enough food to operate a smallish (30-45 family) weekly CSA program, in addition to supplying local restaurants with various items.
