Family of 4 relocating to NC, seeking a mentored lease to learn small-scale farming, animals, garden, and all. Committed

Family of 4 relocating to NC with a long-term goal of owning a small farm. We have gardening and homesteading experience and are ready to expand into animal care, pasture management, and full farm operations. Our vision includes a small dairy flock, laying hens, and a kitchen garden using regenerative practices. Rooted in Christian faith, we see good stewardship of land and animals as a calling, not just a lifestyle. We're seeking a 2-3 year mentored lease as a deliberate step toward ownership. My wife works remotely, keeping us financially stable. We are committed, serious, and ready to work.

Equipment and infrastructure details

We are looking for a property with basic small-farm infrastructure in place — a barn or shed suitable for 2-3 sheep, existing fencing or the ability to install rotational paddocks, a reliable water source for animals and garden irrigation, and on-site housing if available. Farm equipment access (tractor, basic implements) would be a meaningful bonus but is not required. We are willing to contribute labor toward improving or maintaining any existing infrastructure as part of our lease arrangement.

Opportunity details

We are looking for a mentored lease arrangement — ideally 2 to 3 years — with a landowner who is willing to share their knowledge alongside the land. We are a stable, financially secure family relocating to NC, committed to caring for any property as if it were our own. We are honest beginners with serious intent, and we believe the right arrangement is built on mutual trust and shared investment in the land. On-site housing is preferred but we are open to discussing terms that work for both parties.

Practices details

We are committed to organic methods and will use no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. Our approach centers on building soil health through composting, rotational grazing, and cover cropping. For livestock, we plan to use FAMACHA-based targeted parasite management rather than blanket chemical treatment. We see the land as something to be stewarded responsibly for the long term, not extracted from. While we are not pursuing formal organic certification at this stage, every practice we adopt will be consistent with organic and regenerative principles.

Goals details

Our production focus is a small integrated homestead: a dairy sheep or goat flock of 2-3 animals for household milk, cheese, and yogurt; 2-4 laying hens integrated into the pasture rotation; and a raised-bed kitchen garden for family vegetables and herbs. We plan to manage pasture using a 3-paddock rotational system and address livestock parasites through FAMACHA monitoring rather than routine chemical treatment. Long-term we hope to develop a farm-to-fiber wool pipeline from our own flock. All production is for household use at this stage, with an emphasis on building skills and soil health over time.

Experience details

My agricultural background is hands-on rather than formal. I have personal experience with home gardening and homesteading practices including food preservation, composting, and small-scale growing. My wife has done extensive research into small ruminant husbandry, rotational grazing, dairy sheep and goat management, pasture health, and livestock guardian dogs in preparation for this transition. We have studied regenerative and organic growing practices and are actively building our knowledge base. We are honest beginners seeking mentorship, and we believe that commitment and willingness to learn matter more than credentials.
