Seeking
- 6-10 Total acres
- 0-5 Acres of pasture
Desired locations
Family of six seeking land for a multigenerational homestead, small livestock, gardens, and creative home businesses.
Plan
We are a family of six adults pursuing a part-time, small-scale homestead focused on home food production and self-sufficiency rather than commercial-scale farming. I have approximately five years of homesteading experience, including raising meat rabbits, growing fruit trees, and maintaining an herb garden. We plan to expand gradually into poultry, a small flock of sheep, vegetables, perennial herbs, and an orchard. We value practical, hands-on work and hope to build our knowledge while developing a productive, ecologically minded family homestead. Our livelihoods will remain primarily supported by our existing trades and businesses.
Desired infrastructure
Equipment and infrastructure details
We are seeking buildable land with reliable water access, and suitable soils and site conditions for septic systems. Our ideal property would accommodate three households over time, either through an existing home with room for additional residences or vacant land suitable for future construction. Fencing and a barn or outbuilding would be beneficial but not required. We need adequate space for home-based businesses, workshops, hobbies, and animal care. Avoiding mapped flood-prone areas and confirming zoning and multi-home feasibility are essential.
Preferred type of opportunity
Opportunity details
We are primarily seeking to purchase buildable land or a property with an existing home that can serve as a starting point for a multigenerational family homestead. Our long-term plan is to accommodate three households while preserving privacy and shared outdoor space. We are interested in properties with suitable soils for septic, reliable water access, manageable drainage, and enough usable acreage for our goals. We are open to properties that can be improved gradually, provided zoning and site conditions allow for our intended uses. Proximity to our existing work and family responsibilities is essential, so we cannot consider anything outside Craven/Carteret.
Desired farming practices
Practices details
We hope to develop a diverse, small-scale homestead using thoughtful, environmentally responsible practices. Our goals include building healthy soil, composting organic materials, growing perennial herbs and fruit trees, maintaining a productive vegetable garden, and raising a modest number of animals for household use. We are interested in practices that support soil health, biodiversity, responsible animal care, and long-term land stewardship. We plan to develop our systems gradually and adapt them to the property's natural features and resources rather than pursue intensive commercial production.
Production goals
Goals details
Our goal is a diverse family homestead producing food for our own households, with the possibility of modest side income from selected activities. We plan to expand our existing meat rabbit operation and establish a vegetable garden, fruit orchard, and perennial herb plantings. We would also like to raise chickens for eggs, and keep a small flock of sheep for milk and fiber. We are not seeking large-scale commercial production; we want manageable, complementary systems that support household food production, practical skills, and greater self-reliance. We hope to develop these projects over time as our land, experience, and resources allow.

Experience details
My agricultural experience has primarily been hands-on and self-directed through hobby homesteading. I currently raise meat rabbits and maintain fruit trees and an herb garden at our suburban home. These activities have given me a foundation in small-scale animal care and food production, and I am eager to expand my practical knowledge as we establish a larger homestead. Our family also brings experience in skilled trades, animal care, home-based businesses, and other hands-on pursuits.
