Farming part-time for homestead
Updated Nov 4, 2025
Seeking
- 0-5 Total acres
- 0-5 Acres of cropland or tillable land
- 0-5 Acres of pasture
- 0-5 Acres of hayland
Desired locations
Looking to buy up to 5 acres to start a small family farm and give our kids hands-on farm life experiences.
Plan
We plan to begin with a small flock of chickens, beekeeping, and a limited patch of seasonal crops, using responsible, low-impact practices to maintain healthy soil and land. A core goal is to involve our children in hands-on farm activities, teaching them responsibility, animal care, and how food is grown. While not pursuing formal certification, we prioritize sustainable, practical methods suited to a small-scale, family-focused farm.
Desired infrastructure
Equipment and infrastructure details
We plan to start our small family farm from scratch and do not require any existing equipment or infrastructure. It would be a bonus if the property has a well to help get operations started more quickly, but otherwise we are prepared to build and equip the farm ourselves as needed.
Preferred type of opportunity
Opportunity details
Our goal is to buy outright or with traditional financing. We are prepared to start from scratch and equip the farm ourselves, and are seeking a property suitable for chickens, bees, and a small patch of seasonal crops.
Desired farming practices
Practices details
We plan to start with chickens and bees, plus a small patch of seasonal crops, and care for them responsibly to maintain healthy soil and land. Our goal is to involve our children in hands-on farm activities so they can learn about nature, animals, and growing food. While not pursuing formal certification, we would aim to prioritize environmentally friendly and practical practices

Experience details
Over many summers, I assisted with beekeeping, raising and harvesting crops such as corn and potatoes, cutting and stacking hay, and working with cattle and other livestock. These experiences included feeding and caring for animals, maintaining farm equipment, and participating in all stages of planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops.
