Farming part-time for homestead
Updated Feb 20, 2026
Desired locations
Aspiring farmer seeking mentorship and part-time farm work to gain hands-on experience.
Plan
I am an aspiring farmer seeking mentorship and hands on experience through part time farm work in North Carolina. My goal is to learn practical, day to day farm operations from an experienced grower while contributing meaningful labor and support. I’m especially interested in livestock, particularly poultry, and small-scale diversified operations.
Desired infrastructure
Equipment and infrastructure details
I’d prefer a farm that already has some basic setup for livestock, like fencing, shelter, and a good water source. That said, I’m flexible and understand every place is different. I’m happy to work with what’s there and help improve things over time.
Preferred type of opportunity
Opportunity details
Right now, I’m mainly looking for mentorship or part-time employment where I can learn through real hands-on experience. If the opportunity also includes a short-term lease or a lease with mentoring, I’m open to that as well. I’m not in a position to purchase land at this time. My focus is gaining experience, building trust, and growing into something long-term if it makes sense for both sides.
Desired farming practices
Practices details
I’m interested in building a small, community-focused farm centered around livestock like chickens, ducks, and eventually a few cows. I’m not aiming for a large commercial operation, but something steady that can support local families and create a more sustainable way of living. I want to learn how to do it properly and build it the right way over time.
Production goals
Goals details
I’m interested in building a mixed farm that includes both livestock and produce. I’d like to raise poultry and eventually some beef cattle, while also growing vegetables. I think having both animals and crops creates a more balanced and sustainable operation.

Education, training, and employment experience
Experience details
I don’t have formal agricultural education or farm employment experience yet. I’m at the beginning of this path and looking to learn the right way through hands-on work and mentorship. I’ve spent time educating myself on small-scale livestock, especially poultry, and general farm operations, but I understand that real learning happens in the field.
