Farming part-time for homestead
Updated Apr 23, 2026
Seeking
- 6-10 Total acres
- 0-5 Acres of cropland or tillable land
- 0-5 Acres of pasture
Desired locations
Looking for a small to medium homestead with a water source, a barn, farmable/grazable acreage, & forest. House optional
Plan
Farm will be used primarily as a homestead with excess production sold back to the community. Initial plan is to lay the groundwork, focus on soil, vegetables, fruit trees, chickens, and inoculate for mushrooms. Later years would integrate perennial plants, flower gardens, and sheep or goats.
Desired infrastructure
Equipment and infrastructure details
I like a little bit of grade and topography to work with, water, and a barn suitable for animals. If the land has a forested section, we can make good soil. We don’t need to start on a large scale so we can build up to it. No other infrastructure needed from start.
Preferred type of opportunity
Desired farming practices
Practices details
We don’t use chemicals and have learned a lot about regenerative practices. However, we have never farmed on a larger scale, so need to learn the land and best practices to suit it. I focus on the soil, microbiology, and water and will learn how to use rotation, companion plants, and other practices to optimize yield and plant health.

Experience details
We are experienced gardeners with a family history of farming. My family has farmed for generations in the Ohio Valley, but our family farm transferred to a trust under professional farm management without day-to-day involvement from the family. I want to get back to my roots and continue the tradition but with a more sustainability and community rooted orientation. I am a hydrogeologist with education in soil health, microbiology, and water chemistry. New to farming on a larger scale, but have had all sorts of animals all my life and love to be connected to the land.
