Current & past farming practices
Practice details
Our sustainable practices use composts and manures from our farm and local farms. Amendments such as coconut fiber media are acquired from local greenhouses. A local arborist provides wood chips for mulching throughout the vineyard.
Alternative spray practices which include beneficial bacterial, copper and sulfur are used. We sometimes apply softer synthetic fungicides when needed such as axoystrobin and phosphites.
Cultural practices are used for the best match between cultivars and environment and employing pruning and training practices to reduce disease incidence.
Our vineyard is dry farmed. The cover crops encourage predatory insects throughout such as mantids and vespids.
Opportunity
Job or Learning Opportunity
Opportunity details
We are interested in employing/interning and/or mentoring individuals in the cultivation of a vineyard. We are employing sustainable practices in our cultivation. The vineyard is 2.5 acres of vines, with another 0.5 acre of elderberry, chokecherry, blueberries and blackberries. Typical farm practices include mowing, sowing cover crops, pruning vines, setting up training wires, fertilizing and mulching. In addition, we employ fowl (both chickens and ducks that free range) for pest control. Additional acreage (0.5 acre) is planted to sunflowers and winter squashes. Two hoop-houses house fig trees, and an additional hoop house is used for propagating vines and trees.
