Farming part-time for homestead
Updated Aug 24, 2026
Seeking
- 11-50 Total acres
- 11-50 Acres of pasture
Desired locations
Hello!
My husband and I are moving for grad school and looking for an opportunity within an hour of Durham.
Plan
We would love the opportunity to rent and board my horse on the same property in exchange for part time farm work. I am also open to leasing a property and starting my own small boarding program.
Why would you want to rent/board to us?
I’m an experienced horsewoman and my husband is very handy with horses as well. By renting to us, you could be sure not only my horses but yours are in good hands. I care very deeply about all animals and always try to go above and beyond. If you want some extra help around the property, I’m happy to pitch in. If you have been wanting to plan vacations I’d love to take care of your place while you are gone.
Desired infrastructure
Equipment and infrastructure details
If I am renting on your property and working for you I would need minimum
- Living accommodations at least 1000 square feet for my husband and I, separate place or basement apartment are just fine
- Pasture and shelter for 1 horse, with another horse there or opportunity to board a second that I purchase
If I am independently leasing a property to start a small boarding operation I would need
- Barn with stalls
- Adequate pasture depending on number of stalls
- Area to ride, grass, arena, or trials etc
Preferred type of opportunity
Opportunity details
I am open to a few different opportunities
- Work for you for reduced or included rent on your property with opportunity to bring my horses with me
- Lease your property with opportunity to start my own boarding situation
- Work as a small scale farm manager or tend to your livestock for reduced rent cost if there isn’t enough work for full rent
I am a big believer in taking better care for things thanks I found them. I assure you your property would be in good hands.

Desired farming practices
Practices details
Please send me a message if you have a good fit or know of something. I’d like to reiterate I’m not looking for a handout, I’m willing to pay fair market value for a property to lease and board and/or honest hard work on your property so this is a good situation all around.
The earliest we are looking to move is April of 2027 and the latest we would need to be settled is end of August. I’ll need someone in reasonable driving distance to Duke university. I know I’m looking far in advance but I also understand these things take time to work out.
Thank you very much and God bless.
Production goals
Goals details
No job is above me, I’ll happily fix your fence, drive your tractor, clean your stalls, drag your pastures etc. Whatever is needed. My husband is also very handy, he has experience in construction and with cars. While his time is more limited, we would both be willing to improve your property.
I’d love to learn your farming operation, I’ve been very interested in regenerative agriculture and homesteading since before it was popular. I’d love to help and learn practices alongside your operation.
I do have a regular day job, so I am available mornings, afternoon/evening and weekends.

Skills experience
- Horses, I’ve done just about everything you can think of. I’ve worked with highly qualified trainers and ran my own training program to get me through college. I’ve tamed mustangs, started babies, worked with foals and mares, and worked wonders on horses deemed broken, dangerous and unfixable.
- As a teenager, I had several clients I would farm sit for. I’m experienced with cattle, chickens, dogs, cats, pigs, animals needed medication etc. I’m happy to tend to your livestock and help move your cows.
- I love to garden, and I’d be happy to help you with your gardening, agriculture, or hay operation. I’m a fast learner and growing delicious food is part of my passion
